Letters that look alike

Seven-segment displays make b look like 6, 0 like o, and E like F with a missing bar. If the lookup finds nothing, try the lookalike. The readout above shows what each character looks like on the unit.

Fault or protection?

Most brands split codes into two families. A fault means a part failed or is disconnected. A protection means the unit shut itself down on purpose (too hot, wrong voltage, coil freezing) and will often clear by itself when the cause is gone.

Reset once, not ten times

Cutting power at the breaker for five minutes clears the memory. If the code comes straight back it is real. Resetting a compressor protection over and over is how a cheap fix becomes an expensive one.

Same code, different brand

Pioneer, MRCOOL and Senville share a code set because the same factory builds them. Gree and Cooper & Hunter share another. E5 means one thing on one family and something else on the next, so always start from the brand.
