What E1 means on a ACiQ
The indoor and outdoor control boards talk to each other continuously over the signal conductor in the interconnect cable. This code means that conversation has stopped. It is one of the most common codes on a new installation and almost always a wiring problem, not a failed board.
On this platform, E1 is a fault: something has failed or is disconnected and needs diagnosis.
Common causes
- Interconnect wires not landed in the same order at both ends (a swapped signal and neutral is the classic).
- A loose or backed-out terminal screw, or a strand of wire not fully under the screw.
- A damaged, spliced or undersized communication cable (it must be a continuous run of the correct gauge).
- No power at the outdoor unit: a tripped breaker, an open disconnect or a blown fuse.
- A failed outdoor control board or a blown board fuse, often after a lightning event or a power surge.
- On multi-zone systems, one indoor unit's cable landed on the wrong outdoor terminal block (A, B, C).
How to fix it yourself
Work through the checks below first; they resolve most cases. If they do not, the repair itself may need a technician.
- Reset the system: switch the breaker (or the outdoor disconnect) off, wait a full five minutes so the boards fully discharge, then switch it back on and restart from the remote.
- Confirm the outdoor unit actually has power. Check the breaker, the disconnect and any fuse in the disconnect box.
- With power off, open the terminal covers on both units and check the interconnect wiring. Each numbered terminal must land on the same number at both ends, every strand must be under its screw, and there must be no splices, nicks or reversed conductors.
- Make sure the communication wire is a solid, continuous run of the gauge the manual specifies. Extending it with a wire nut or using a lighter gauge is a frequent cause of intermittent errors.
- If you own a multimeter and are comfortable using it, measure the supply voltage at the outdoor unit's L1 and L2 terminals with the unit running. A 230 V system should read roughly 208 to 253 VAC.
- If the wiring checks out and the outdoor unit has power, look for LED fault lights on the outdoor control board (behind the service panel). A dark board with good supply voltage usually means a blown board fuse or a dead board.
Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.
When to call a technician
Call a technician if the wiring is verified correct and the outdoor unit has power but the code persists. Board diagnosis needs the service manual and a meter.

What E1 means on a ACiQ
The control board is reading the indoor room temperature sensor as open or shorted, which means the thermistor (a small resistor whose resistance changes with temperature) is returning a value outside its normal range. The unit usually stops, or runs with the wrong output, because the control board no longer trusts that temperature reading.
On this platform, E1 is a fault: something has failed or is disconnected and needs diagnosis.
Common causes
- The indoor room temperature thermistor has failed (they do drift and fail with age and heat cycling).
- Its plug has worked loose from the control board, or a pin has corroded.
- The sensor lead is chafed, pinched or chewed, giving an intermittent open or short.
- The control board's sensor input has failed (rare compared with the sensor itself).
How to fix it yourself

- If the code comes straight back after a reset, the fault is real and not a glitch.
- With power off, locate the indoor room temperature sensor behind the front panel near the air inlet. Follow its lead back to the board and reseat the plug firmly.
- Inspect the lead for damage along its whole length, especially where it passes through the chassis.
- If you have a multimeter, unplug the sensor and measure its resistance. A reading near zero ohms (short) or infinite (open) confirms a bad sensor. Most mini split thermistors read roughly 5 to 20 kΩ at room temperature, so a value in that range with a steady drift as you warm it in your hand means the sensor is fine and the board is the suspect.
- Replacement thermistors are inexpensive and plug in. Match the part number from the parts list for your model.
