What 73 means on a EG4

The unit is limiting its output because input current is at the limit. It keeps running at reduced capacity. Common on a hybrid unit when the solar input is weak and the AC circuit is shared.

On this platform, 73 is a protection: the system stopped or throttled itself to prevent damage; many clear on their own once conditions return to normal.

Common causes

  • Weak solar input with the AC feed on a marginal circuit.
  • A dirty outdoor coil raising current.
  • Extreme outdoor temperatures.

How to fix it yourself

You can almost always clear this yourself with the steps below.

  1. Look at the outdoor unit: clear leaves, cottonwood fluff, snow or ice from the coil and make sure the fan can spin freely and nothing is stacked against the cabinet.
  2. On a hybrid unit, also check the DC input: undersized or shaded panels, a loose MC4 connector, or a DC voltage outside the 90 to 350 V window will show up as a power protection.
  3. If you own a multimeter and are comfortable using it, measure the supply voltage at the outdoor unit's L1 and L2 terminals with the unit running. A 230 V system should read roughly 208 to 253 VAC.

Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.
