What P0 means on a MRCOOL
The inverter power module that drives the compressor reported a fault: over-current, over-temperature, or an internal error. The outdoor unit shuts down to protect the compressor and the module.
On this platform, P0 is a protection: the system stopped or throttled itself to prevent damage; many clear on their own once conditions return to normal.
Common causes
- The outdoor coil is blocked or the fan has failed, so the module is overheating.
- Low or unstable supply voltage causing the module to draw excess current.
- A failing compressor drawing more current than the module can supply.
- A failed IPM or outdoor main board.
- Loose compressor terminal connections.
How to fix it yourself
Do the reset and the visual checks, but the underlying repair needs a technician with a meter and the service manual.
- Reset the system: switch the breaker (or the outdoor disconnect) off, wait a full five minutes so the boards fully discharge, then switch it back on and restart from the remote.
- Look at the outdoor unit: clear leaves, cottonwood fluff, snow or ice from the coil and make sure the fan can spin freely and nothing is stacked against the cabinet.
- If you own a multimeter and are comfortable using it, measure the supply voltage at the outdoor unit's L1 and L2 terminals with the unit running. A 230 V system should read roughly 208 to 253 VAC.
- If the code appears only on the hottest afternoons or during peak heating, heat rejection is the suspect. Clean the outdoor coil thoroughly.
- Do not keep resetting and running the unit. Repeated IPM trips can take the compressor with them.
Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.
When to call a technician
This is a technician diagnosis: they will check compressor windings, module output and DC bus voltage. Plan for a board or compressor repair conversation.
Which MRCOOL units show P0
This page applies to MRCOOL DIY 2nd/3rd Gen, DIY 4th Gen, DIY Multi-Zone, Advantage, Olympus and Easy Pro units on the indoor unit display (classic two-character codes). MRCOOL's own documentation lists P0 as "Inverter module (IPM) malfunction", the same definition used across the Midea platform (classic codes) it is built on. If your unit shows a code with a different shape (for example a four-character code, or a plain number), it is from a different table; use the lookup with your exact code.
Where MRCOOL shows this code
The indoor display shows the code in place of the temperature. On DIY 4th Gen units a four-character code alternates between its two halves (EL, then 0C); write down both. The MRCOOL app also reports the current fault.
E codes are faults in the indoor unit or its communication link, F codes are faults on the outdoor side, and P codes are protections: the outdoor unit has stopped itself to prevent damage. EC is the refrigerant leak check.

Questions people ask
Can I reset a MRCOOL P0 code myself?
Yes. Turn the system off at the breaker for five minutes, then restart it. If P0 comes back, the fault is real and needs the checks above.
Is it safe to keep running a MRCOOL showing P0?
Not repeatedly. A protection code means the unit stopped itself to prevent damage, and resetting it over and over can turn a cheap repair into a compressor failure. Reset once, check the basics, and stop if it returns.
What will a technician check for P0?
This is a technician diagnosis: they will check compressor windings, module output and DC bus voltage. Plan for a board or compressor repair conversation. Ask for the measurements, not just a parts quote.
