Rheem mini split error code F0

Refrigerant shortage or system blockage detected.

What F0 means on a Rheem

The board decided the refrigerant flow is wrong: either the charge is low or something is restricting it. On some models F0 also shows deliberately while the unit runs a refrigerant-recovery (pump-down) mode started from the remote; if you did not start that, treat it as a fault.

On this platform, F0 is a fault: something has failed or is disconnected and needs diagnosis.

Common causes

  • Low charge from a leak or an incomplete charge.
  • A service valve not fully open.
  • A kinked or crushed line set.
  • A stuck expansion valve.

How to fix it yourself

Work through the checks below first; they resolve most cases. If they do not, the repair itself may need a technician.

  1. Open both service valves fully.
  2. Inspect the line set for kinks.
  3. Leak-check the flare joints with soapy water.
  4. Anything inside the refrigerant circuit (sensors are fine, but valves, compressors and leaks are not) needs EPA-certified refrigerant handling. That is a technician job.

Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.

When to call a technician

A technician must check the charge with gauges and find the leak.

Which Rheem units show F0

This page applies to Rheem Classic and Classic Plus wall-mount (RIWH / ROWH), Endeavor Line multi-zone and Floating Air series (2023 and later) units on the Floating Air series (Friedrich-built, Gree platform). Rheem's own documentation lists F0 as "Refrigerant shortage or system blockage detected", the same definition used across the Gree platform it is built on. If your unit shows a code with a different shape (for example a four-character code, or a plain number), it is from a different table; use the lookup with your exact code.

Where Rheem shows this code

Floating Air series (Friedrich-built, Gree platform): The code shows on the indoor unit's display in place of the temperature. If the display is off, press the Light button on the remote. Some models also count out the code as indicator blinks. E codes are system protections and faults, F codes are mostly sensor faults, H codes are outdoor and compressor protections, U codes are motor and valve faults, and P codes are power-supply faults.

F0 on other brands

The same characters do not always mean the same thing. Check the brand on your unit.

  • Pioneer F0 Overload current protection (compressor over-current)
  • Blueridge F0 Refrigerant shortage or system blockage detected / Overload current protection (compressor over-current)
  • Gree F0 Refrigerant shortage or system blockage detected
  • Zone Air F0 Infrared (remote receiver) sensor fault
  • Heil F0 Overload current protection (compressor over-current) / Refrigerant shortage or system blockage detected
  • ACiQ F0 Overload current protection (compressor over-current) / Infrared (remote receiver) sensor fault

Questions people ask

Can I reset a Rheem F0 code myself?

Yes. Turn the system off at the breaker for five minutes, then restart it. If F0 comes back, the fault is real and needs the checks above.

Is it safe to keep running a Rheem showing F0?

The unit will usually refuse to run, or run with reduced output, until the fault is cleared. Repeated resets do not fix anything and can mask a problem that is getting worse.

Do I need a technician for Rheem F0?

Work through the checks below first; they resolve most cases. If they do not, the repair itself may need a technician. A technician must check the charge with gauges and find the leak.
