What PA means on a TCL

On a multi-zone system, zones are calling for opposite modes; on a single unit, the board lost contact with an accessory.

On this platform, PA is a protection: the system stopped or throttled itself to prevent damage; many clear on their own once conditions return to normal.

Common causes

  • Zones set to opposite modes.
  • A loose accessory connector.

How to fix it yourself

You can almost always clear this yourself with the steps below.

  1. Set every zone to the same mode.
  2. Reset the system: switch the breaker (or the outdoor disconnect) off, wait a full five minutes so the boards fully discharge, then switch it back on and restart from the remote.

Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.

When to call a technician

Not usually a fault.

Which TCL units show PA

This page applies to TCL TCL Elite, TCL Ocarina, TCL FreshIN and TCL TAC series units. TCL's own documentation lists PA as "Preset mode conflict or indoor top-flow communication fault", the same definition used across the TCL platform it is built on. If your unit shows a code with a different shape (for example a four-character code, or a plain number), it is from a different table; use the lookup with your exact code.

Where TCL shows this code

The indoor display shows the code in place of the set temperature. E codes are faults: something has failed and needs diagnosis. P, H, d and F codes are protections: the system stopped or throttled itself to prevent damage, and many clear on their own once conditions return to normal.

PA on other brands

The same characters do not always mean the same thing. Check the brand on your unit.

Questions people ask

Can I reset a TCL PA code myself?

Yes. Turn the system off at the breaker for five minutes, then restart it. If PA comes back, the fault is real and needs the checks above.

Is it safe to keep running a TCL showing PA?

Not repeatedly. A protection code means the unit stopped itself to prevent damage, and resetting it over and over can turn a cheap repair into a compressor failure. Reset once, check the basics, and stop if it returns.

Do I need a technician for TCL PA?

You can almost always clear this yourself with the steps below. Not usually a fault.
