What 16 means on a Hisense
In cooling the indoor coil is getting cold enough to freeze; in heating it is getting too hot. Usually restricted indoor airflow, or a coil sensor fault.
On this platform, 16 is a protection: the system stopped or throttled itself to prevent damage; many clear on their own once conditions return to normal.
Common causes
- Dirty filters or a dirty indoor coil.
- The indoor coil temperature sensor loose or failed (see 34).
- Low refrigerant charge (cooling).
- A refrigerant system fault.
How to fix it yourself
You can almost always clear this yourself with the steps below.
- Pull the front panel and check the filters and the indoor coil. Dirty filters and a matted coil restrict airflow, and airflow problems trigger a surprising number of protection codes.
- In cooling, run Fan-only until any ice is gone, then raise the fan speed and set temperature.
- If it recurs with clean filters, have the charge checked.
Switch off power at the breaker before opening either unit. Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a charge for several minutes after power is cut.

Hisense's own documentation lists 16 as "Anti-freeze protection (cooling) or overload protection (heating)", the same definition used across the Hisense it is built on. Where Hisense shows this code
Hisense inverter splits store the fault as a number. When the compressor has stopped on a fault, point the remote at the unit and press the SLEEP button 10 times within 10 seconds: the indoor display then shows the code (a second stored fault shows after four more presses). The Sleep, Timer and Running lamps also blink a pattern that matches the code. Newer models show the number on the display without the button sequence. Codes 1 to 21 are outdoor-unit faults and protections; 33 to 41 are indoor-unit faults. 0 means no fault is stored.

Can I reset a Hisense 16 code myself?
